PRESENTATION

El mundo considera el patrimonio histórico como parte esencial de la cultura de cualquier nación. Este fenómeno, sin embargo, es relativamente reciente. No fue sino hasta los siglos XVIII y XIX cuando la protección del patrimonio histórico surgió en Europa como una necesidad. Nada podía hacer pensar que al otro lado del Atlántico, en Estados Unidos, la joven nación pudiese llegar a sentir una necesidad parecida. Sin embargo así fue, y desde principios del XIX los norteamericanos también han luchado por conservar aquellos vestigios materiales del pasado que les eran útiles en el presente.

De todos los estados americanos el caso de Texas es especialmente interesante. Su pasado histórico es excepcional (fue la única nación soberana que se unió voluntariamente a la Unión), su patrimonio histórico es excelente (aunque desconocido en España, con la folklórica excepción de El Álamo), y su sistema de protección está considerado como uno de los mejores del país, por su calidad y resultados.

En Inventando el Pasado se relata como un día los tejanos necesitaron conservar su patrimonio histórico, como han ido evolucionando sus necesidades protectoras a lo largo de un siglo, como se han organizado para conseguirlas, y como conservan su patrimonio cultural hoy. En este libro el público español aprenderá además algunas lecciones. A pesar de su lejanía cultural, la alta rentabilidad cultural y económica que ha alcanzado la protección del patrimonio histórico en Texas hacen necesario dar a conocer su evolución, logros e ideas. El ejemplo tejano debería inspirar a países como el nuestro, que contarán con más y mejor patrimonio histórico, pero que aún tanto tiene que avanzar en su gestión.

CONTENTS

In the world today historical heritage is an essential part of any nation's culture. This activity, however, is a very recent phenomenon. It was not until the 18th and 19th centuries that historic preservation became a need for European countries. There were no reasons to believe that a young nation on the other side of the Atlantic, the United States, would also need to protect its heritage. But so it was, and since the early 19th century Americans have fought to preserve those bits of the past still useful in the present.

Among all American states, Texas' case is specially interesting. Its history is exceptional (it was the only independent nation that voluntarily joined the Union), its historical heritage is magnificient (although unknown outside the US), and its protection system is considered to be one of the best in the country, both for its quality and results.

Inventando el Pasado is the story of how Texans one day felt the need to preserve its past, how they have organized themselves to satisfy this need, and how they protect their heritage today. In this book the Spanish public will also learn some lessons from the Texan case. Despite the cultural distance, Spaniards need to know about the evolution and excellent results of historic preservation in Texas in order to inspire a country that, sure, has a better heritage to protect, but also has too much to advance in its management.

ORÍGENES

Este libro fue en su origen la tesis de máster que escribí durante mi estancia en Southwest Texas State University entre 1997 y 1998. Posteriormente amplié este trabajo, lo traduje al español entre 1999 y 2000, y finalmente lo presenté en la Universidad de Alcalá como uno de los requisitos de mi programa de doctorado. Si desea obtener más información sobre ambos trabajos puede dirigerse a mis dos directores de tesis: Dr. Jesús Francisco de la Teja en Southwest Texas university y Dr. Joaquín Gómez Pantoja en la Universidad de Alcalá.

Una versión previa de mi tesis recibió en 1998 el Premio de Ensayo Histórico de la San Antonio Conservation Society.

ORIGINS

The origin of this book was the master's thesis I wrote in Southwest Texas State University between 1997 and 1998. This work was later expanded translated into Spanish between 1999 and 2000, and finally submitted in the University of Alcalá as a requirement of my doctorate program. A previous version of my thesis received the 1998 Historical Essay Award of the San Antonio Conservation Society.
