MAPS & EMPIRES
During the last months, scholars working on the Geography of Ancient Spain are awakening to the implications of three new important findings: the Gallazzi-Kramer papyrus, which contains the first, most complete and oldest map of Iberia; the recently found evidence for a Provincia Hispania superior; and the aes Bergidense, which names another and, until now, unheard Augustan province, the Transduriana. To cap such a felicitous year, the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World has just came out, an undertaking which will surely change our understanding of the Classical World's geographic frame.
To mark up those events, we are holding at the Universidad Internacional "Men*ndez Pelayo" (UIMP) a small and specialized scholarly meeting to discuss, among other things, the following topics:
The Earth and its representation in the Classical World; an appraisal of modern scholarship on cartography of the Roman Empire: situation, projects and perspectives.
The Provinces of Roman Spain: new provinces, new problems.
The Classical Authorities on Geography: Quellenforschung, Veracity vs. Paradoxography.
Scholarship on Ancient Topography in Iberia and elsewhere.
The program will address all these points; the meeting will be held this coming November, 20-22th in Valencia, one of the most beautiful and picturesque Spanish cities and Visits to the city and to the nearby town of Sagunto are scheduled. The meeting will be closed to the public, and only a small number of colleagues and classical scholars will be allowed to attend it. Please, consult UIMP's administration at Valencia on participation.
