Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática

A brief history of the Polytechnic School

The Polytechnic School started in the semesters of 1966 to 1967 as part of the education given by the “Universidad Laboral de Alcalá”. At the beginning, studies such as Telecommunication Engineering (3 years' degree programme) in Electronic Equipments, Engineering in Industrial Electronics (3 years' degree programme) and Engineering in Topography were part of the teaching curricula.

Although university teaching was not official, the academic activity was part of the Spanish Department of Education that had been established for each educational area. General Law of Education recognized Electronic Equipments as a speciality on the 4th of August 1970. The development of this law permitted the integration of this School as a University School in the general academic system, connecting to the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

Telecommunication Engineering School was transformed in the Polytechnic University School and was authorized to organize the study programmes of Engineering in Electronic Equipments, which was traditionally taught, Engineering in Electricity (Industrial Electricity) and three years degree in Computer Engineering in the Legal Statute 1049 of 27th of July of 1990. Both of the newly established degrees were published according to the 8th September of 1992 and the 1st of June of 1992 ruling.

The lectures started in order to obtain the degrees of Telecommunication Systems, Electronic Systems and Telematics in the study programme of 1993-94. Likewise, a new degree in Industrial Engineering such as Industrial Electronics, Computer Engineering of Systems and in Computer Management was also established in the study programme of 1994-95.

The School received a final boost with the beginning of two excellent engineering degrees belonging to the field of new technologies areas and related to the Technical Engineering courses that are already taught in the years 1996 and 1997. These are Electronic Engineering and Telecommunication Engineering.

The Legal Statute 1138 of 30th September of 1998 recognizes the Telecommunication Engineering University School connected to Alcalá University. The university moved its studies to a new campus building, the new Polytechnic building, a wonderful architectonic work carried out by the prominent architect Mr. Antonio Fernández Alba.

Computing School was founded on 16th October of 2003 when the Education Ministry of Madrid Community authorized the creation of two new schools at Alcalá University. These are Architecture and Geodesy School and Computing School. Since then, the first School organizes Architecture and Geodesy degrees, and its headquarters moved to Carmen Calzado Building. On the other hand, Computing School took Computer Science Engineering, Systems Computing Technical Engineering and Management Computing Technical Engineering degrees and the new School go on being located at the same building sharing its head office with Polytechnic School.

Recently, and according to the Bologna Process of adapting old degrees to the European High Education Space, Computing School started the teaching of Bachelor in Computer Science Engineering, Bachelor in Computer Engineering and Bachelor Information Systems in 2009.

Despite of the fact that Computing School is quite new, it has the experience of teaching Computer Science official degrees in more than ten years, due to that, these teachings have been consolidated. On the other hand, the departments and Computing School have been involved in research works and collaboration with companies and public institutions to improve the quality of titles and the prestige of the center.

Its facilities have enabled the encouragement of a hardworking academic activity and research. Regarding the present status it could be seen as the consolidation of new teachings and an increasing work of research and collaboration with enterprises. This last aspect has been facilitated by the creation of 'Centro de Alta Tecnología y Homologación' (a centre of High Technology and official approvals) located in the same building and considered to be the centre of support for the research development departments.
